Plans underway for the 150th Edition of Russell Fair in 2008
Russell, Ontario – August 9, 2007 – With the 149th
Russell Fair just around the corner, the 150th Anniversary
Committee is hard at work to ensure that the 2008 edition of the Fair
will be an impressive celebration a hundred and fifty years in the
making!
“To kick off the festivities, the Russell Agricultural Society will be
hosting a Salute to the Past Presidents – Gala Dinner on November 3,
2007 to salute the Past Presidents of the Fair”, said Judy McFaul,
President, Russell Agricultural Society. “The 150th
Anniversary Committee would also welcome any kind of memorabilia, such
as old ribbons, articles, and photos of past presidents.”
Throughout 2008, activities and events will commemorate Russell Fair’s
legacy of ‘A proud past…A promising future’.
“In preparation for this milestone anniversary, we are inviting budding
artists to submit their entries as part of a design contest for the 150th
Anniversary Russell Fair 2008 prize list cover image”, said Theresa
Wever, Chair of the 150th Anniversary Committee. “The winning
image should reflect the agricultural history or highlights of past
fairs.”
All entries must be submitted to the Fair Secretary by August 31, 2007.
The winning image will be chosen by a jury and the selected artist will
receive a $150 cash award. The image will appear on the prize list
publication distributed by the Russell Agricultural Society and may also
be used throughout 2008 as a promotional piece.

The annual Russell Fair has been a focal point for Russellers since
1858. The horse races of the early days have given way to foot races,
lawn tractor races, automobile races, tractor and truck pulls, to this
year’s demolition derby. The Fair’s agricultural roots – livestock, home
crafts, fruits, vegetables, flowers – have spread to include a classic
auto show, super midway, pet show, baby contest, trade exhibits and
antique equipment show. But the Fair would not be complete without its
entertainment, including live bands, amateur talent shows, and the
ever-popular Fair Factor contest.
While the Fair has evolved over the past 149 years, this annual
gathering remains a highlight every fall for friends, families and
neighbouring communities. Come harvest the excitement at the 2007
Russell Fair on September 6, 7, 8, and 9.
