Calling all Teens and Bakers to the Russell Fair!
Russell, Ontario – August 15, 2007 – The 2007 edition of the
Russell Fair will see the return of the popular Battle of the Schools
and the addition of the Dr. Oetker Best of Show Contest – a prestigious
culinary arts prize and trophy.
For the third consecutive year, students from the St. Thomas Aquinas and
Russell High School will go head-to-head in the Battle of the Schools –
a contest featuring three separate events. Two teams of six students
from each of these schools will compete for bragging rights, a trophy to
display in their school, and a $50 prize for use by the winning school’s
athletic departments.
“We tell students to bring a change of clothes and be prepared for
anything,” said Kara Ruiter, a Junior Director of the Russell
Agricultural Society and member of the organizing committee for the
Battle of the Schools. “Although the specific activities are secret
until the day of the event, I can tell you that they will include an
eating contest, a tug of war, and an obstacle course. Every year, we
look for participants who are willing to do basically anything.”
The group of Junior Directors – Heather Morrison, Kent Thompson, Kyle
Thompson, Kara Ruiter, Monica Schoeni, Kevin Tanner – came up with the
idea for the Battle of the Schools after much discussion. The Junior
Directors are challenging all students from the St. Thomas Aquinas and
Russell High to wear their school colours and cheer on their teams. All
events will be held in the North ball diamond of the Fairgrounds on
Saturday, September 8. The first event is set to begin at 10 a.m.,
followed by the second and third events starting at noon.
Also this year, the Russell Fair is proud to welcome the addition of the
Dr. Oetker Best of Show Contest as part of its culinary arts
competition. Headed by Ina Henry, this committee relies
on the expertise
of Shirley Sullivan, who coordinates the handicraft section and Mona
Saunders, who
oversees the culinary arts section.
“To be chosen among the 10 fairs out of 253 fairs in Ontario to be
offered the $100 prize from Dr. Oetker Best of Show Contest is quite an
honour and
I am just thrilled,” said Mona Saunders. “This will mean that a ‘Dr.
Oetker Best of Show Baking’ trophy will be presented every year to a
worthy competitor in our Fair.”
Local bakers are also encouraged to participate in a Dr. Oetker
Baking Contest for any product made using Dr. Oetker Vanilla Sugar and
Dr.
Oetker Baking Powder. Although the Dr. Oetker products are well-known in
Europe, local food stores have gotten behind this initiative by stocking
their shelves with Dr. Oetker products. Registration forms and
additional information are available through
www.russellfair.com or by contacting Mona Saunders at 613-445-5788.
In addition, be sure to look for a new information booth in the exhibit
hall sponsored by the University of Guelph. It will have information
about the food programs offered at their Kemptville Campus.
The Russell Agricultural Society has been actively promoting
agriculture, crafts and homemaking in this community for the past 149
years.
Come harvest the excitement at the 2007 Russell Fair on September 6, 7,
8, and 9!
