Russell Fair Announces its Entertainment Line-up

Russell, Ontario - July 28, 2009 – The Russell Agricultural Society today announced its entertainment line-up for this year’s Russell Fair, which will run from September 10 to 13.

“Barney Bentall & the Legendary Hearts, in one of their rare appearances in eastern Canada this year, will be the feature group for the Friday night concert,” said Gord Sheldrick, coordinator for the Russell Fair entertainment. “The Ottawa group Little Bones will open the concert, offering a tribute dedicated to the music of The Tragically Hip.”

Barney Bentall & the Legendary Hearts’ self-titled debut album in 1988 featured three hit Canadian singles including "Something to Live For", "House of Love (is Haunted)" and "Come Back to Me". Sales of that album reached platinum status in Canada (100,000 records sold).

In 1989, Barney Bentall & the Legendary Hearts won the Juno Award for "Most Promising Group of the Year". The next year, the group appeared in the Sandy Wilson film American Boyfriends, and were nominated for a Genie Award for "Restless Dreamer", a song they wrote, and which appeared on the soundtrack.

The band toured extensively through 1991 and 1992 before recording their third release for Sony Music in 1993, “Ain't Life Strange”.

Their 1995 album Gin Palace proved to be their fastest selling record and it reached gold status in 90 days. That same year, the band mounted two sold-out Canadian tours before going on hiatus. Barney Bentall & the Legendary Hearts returned to touring in 2008.

Tickets for the Barney Bentall & the Legendary Hearts concert are priced at $25 in advance or $30 at the door and can be purchased at the Russell Pronto or by credit card by telephone at 613-445-8624 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.

The Russell Fair’s weekend outdoor entertainment will feature Cougar Chick Rock Tribute Show, an all-female group offering a high energy, dance-your-face-off rock show. The extraordinary vocals, choreography and dramatic staging make this show band a must-see on Saturday afternoon.

Following the demolition derby on Saturday night, the Cornwall-based band Whiskey Sour will play everything from blues to rock and roll to easy listening and everything in between.

Again this year, Sunday will have a definite western flavour at the Fair. In addition to the ever-popular tractor pull and the return of the fall cutting horse competition, the well-known entertainer Wayne Rostad will take the stage in the afternoon. The Gruff Sisters Kitchen Party – a three-member group playing music from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s – will close out the entertainment on Sunday afternoon.

New this year, Sunday’s Seniors Day at the Fair will offer special entertainment and activities in the arena for the enjoyment of the seniors in our community.

“Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our many volunteers and the ongoing support of our sponsors, we are proud to host the 151st edition of our annual Russell Fair” said Theresa Wever, President of the Russell Agricultural Society.
